Our History
In 1985, James Ferris started Ferris Carpentry Inc. while simultaneously working as a career firefighter for the city of Peekskill. He grew his clientele, the old-fashion way: with hard work and word of mouth. His crew included a dedicated team of experts and during summers he employed his two sons, Daniel and Nick Ferris. During this time, he showed them everything they now know. Following their father’s career paths, after graduating from Peekskill High School and the BOCES vocational training program in 2002, Nick stayed full-time for many years as a carpenter and Daniel eventually became a career firefighter for the city of Peekskill.
After many successful years in business, the initial corporation was dissolved by James in 2008 during the recession. However in 2018,ten years later, Nick was able to secure the family name again for his business; Ferris Carpentry LLC was officially born. Nick worked tirelessly nights and weekends for clients while being a busy full-time employee, loving husband and dedicated father of two young boys. One year later Nick decided to fully commit to his calling and love of carpentry so on 4/4/2019 he took a leap of faith and left a stable union job at a municipality to dedicate all of his time to building his business. With this choice, he risked it all and bet on himself to pursue his life as a self-made entrepreneur.
Coming full circle, Nick became the Ferris Carpentry owner, Daniel worked with the family business on his off days from the firehouse and this new opportunity rejuvenated James after retiring from the firehouse to work right alongside his two sons again. He was able to guide them, work hard and laugh with them like old times. Nick was happy to have his dream team and family business starting off on such a great foundation. Nevertheless, sometimes the unexpected happens and forces a business owner to pivot and prioritize…for the Ferris’, family is always first.
Unfortunately, on December 28, 2019, James Ferris passed away of lung cancer but was surrounded by loved ones and coincidentally he was wearing his green Ferris Carpentry shirt as he took his final breath. Sadly, he perished but left with pride in his heart knowing his legacy will live on through Ferris Carpentry for generations.
